Risha’s Story

Hi! My name is Risha. I was diagnosed January, 2018. At the age of 26 with Multiple Sclerosis.

Prior to my diagnosis I was only experiencing minor cognitive issues (memory, word-picking, concentration) Symptoms I never even thought were concerning. Overall, I felt fairly normal not realizing that neurologically it would turn into something bigger. Everything happened so suddenly. I experienced relapsing symptoms such as numbness on one side of my face, costochondritis (also known as MS hug) & burning/itchy sensation in my left forearm within 2 weeks prior to my diagnosis. Unlike some chronic illnesses where it takes time to be diagnosed. I had an immediate classic case of MS. I was diagnosed with Retrobulbar Optic Neuritis in my left eye, causing me to temporarily lose my vision. (Thanks to 5 days of high dose IV steroids, I was able to gain my vision back.) All leading up to a MRI, where doctors found multiple lesions on my brain & spine.

I am currently on my 2nd drug modifying therapy, Rituximab to delay any progression of my MS. After recently transitioning off of a medication to avoid risk of a rare brain infection called Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy. I was advised short-term use to only get my active MS under control. I am beyond grateful for my medication!

I refer to my MS as a “Blessing in disguise” It has opened my eyes to a whole new perspective in life & although I am still newly diagnosed, I am learning to listen to my body. It is difficult to remain positive all the time but I believe that “thinking negatively will bring negative outcomes.” MS has taught me to be mindful & patient, to take better care of my health & to love myself more. It has also shown me the strength I never even knew I had.

As a lifestyle-blogger I have incorporated my new lifestyle on my blog ‘Reeshespieces.com’ to advocate & raise awareness of not just MS but other chronic illnesses as well. Because of this.. it gives me hope that some day, we will ALL have a cure.😊🧡
